The Ethereum Foundation realizes its development strategy to identify the effectiveness of the basic protocol and the challenges of the user experience, following recent leadership changes earlier this year.
Co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak described the areas of intervention updated in a public declaration on X earlier in the day, stressing that change is intended to strengthen Ethereum long-term scalability while improving the short-term conviviality.
Stańczak has described the discussions surrounding the roadmap of the base layer of Ethereum as an extended and focused on the community, noting that changes are designed to refine researchers and basic developers. Stańczak wrote:
Our discussions on the road 1 roadmap has been important, and comments have so far suggested that the community appreciates our ambition. Transforming this ambition into reality now depends on the objective of development teams and development researchers.
As part of its strategic transition, the Ethereum Foundation aims to give more time to Vitalik Buterin to focus on advanced research rather than daily operational surveillance.
“We have aimed, among other things, to release Vitalik’s time for research and exploration,” said Stéńczak, adding that recent Buterin writings on subjects such as RISC-V and ZKVMS have helped draw attention to “processing technologies”.
According to Stéńczak, these ideas played an important role in the realignment of the Ethereum community around long -term priorities, such as privacy, modularity and decentralized infrastructure.
Stańczak said that Buterin’s proposals are not mandates but starting points for the exploration led by the community:
Vitalik’s proposals will always gain weight, but they are intended to start conversations and encourage progress in difficult research fields.
He also stressed the importance of giving other researchers the same freedom, highlighting the continuous work of contributors like Justin Drake and Tankard Feist.
Overall. The foundation’s research management is now added to short-term results which include a better layer of layer 1, improved integration of the Play-2 and more “transparent” user experiences, especially in upcoming upgrades like Pectra, Fusaka and Glamsterdam.
The Foundation also estimates the feasibility of going from the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) to a more modern execution environment powered by RISC-V.
This proposal, initially introduced by Buterin, suggests that RISC-V could rationalize execution, improve efficiency and simplify the implementation of proof of zero knowledge.
“We explore means to present projects that are currently looking for three to five years,” noted Stéńczak, referring to a possible acceleration in the execution of new generation and the development of the consensus layer.
The advantages of RISC-V include wider linguistic compatibility and the rear compatibility potential with existing EVM contracts. Developers could continue to use solidity and Vyper or develop in languages such as rust.
In addition, RISC-V could improve the performance of the validator thanks to the personalization of the material level, while retaining the basic functionalities Ethereum such as the account models and the contractual interactions.
As research and experimentation continues, Stańczak stressed the importance of the community’s contribution: “Ethereum researchers often ask that readers recognize the exploratory nature of their posts and proposals. Emphasis remains essential. “
